THE MIRACLE OF THE FLOOD
“…BY THE WORD of the Lord the [FLOOD came] …”
(Psalms 33:6 NASB). “…I am going to bring
floodwaters on the earth...”
(Genesis 6:9-22 NIV). “…And rain fell on the earth forty days and
forty nights. … (Genesis 7
NIV).“…All things (including the FLOOD) came
into being through Him…
(John 1:1-4 NASB).
*
Why is the Genesis
FLOOD considered a miracle? A MIRACLE is any action where God intervenes with
the common and naturally normal operations by preforming something UNIQUELY
supernatural.
The MIRACLE of the
FLOOD is an example of how God uniquely performed something supernatural that
was NOT common or naturally normal in those days.
What made the flood a
miracle when it destroyed so many lives? Most people judge the flood and
criticize God for being an unjust since humans and animals died.
“…The Lord saw how great the wickedness of the human race had become on the
earth, and that every inclination of the thoughts of the human heart was only
evil all the time. The Lord regretted that he had made
human beings on the earth, and his heart was deeply troubled. So the Lord said, “I will wipe from the face of the earth the human race I have
created—and with them the animals, the birds and the creatures that move along
the ground—for I regret that I have made them… I will send rain on the earth
for forty days and forty nights, and I will wipe from the face of the earth every living creature
I have made…”
(Genesis 6:5-6, 7:6 NIV).
“…The Lord saw … that every inclination of the thoughts of the human heart was only evil all the time. …”
(Genesis 6:5-6, 7:6 NIV).
SIN had reached a level where the human
heart thought about EVIL “ALL” the time.
“…through one man SIN
entered into the world, and DEATH
THROUGH SIN, and so DEATH passed to all men—“(Romans 5:12 KJV). If
DEATH passed to ALL men through “ONE” man’s sin, what does the SIN of MANY men
do?
The weak, the helpless, and even the
innocent are put on the path of death because of the EVIL actions of others. “… DEATH passed to all
men—“(Romans
5:12 KJV).
The bottom line is that the world had
become incredibly corrupt and perverted; far from God’s holiness.“… The Lord regretted that he had made human beings on the earth, and his heart
was deeply troubled…”
(Genesis 6:6 NIV).
Regret can be
translated to mean grieved. God grieved over the evil actions of mankind that
were so far removed from his HOLY and RIGHTEOUS character. “…So the Lord said, “I will wipe from the face of the earth the human race I have
created—and with them the animals, the birds and the creatures that move along
the ground—for I regret that I have made them…” (Genesis 6:7-8 NIV).
“… [Their]
… iniquities (sin) …separated [them]… from God…
…” (Isaiah 59:2 KJV). “…and SIN, when it is finished, BRINGETH FORTH
DEATH…” (James 1:13-15 NLT). “…The wages of sin is death…” (Romans 6:23 KJV).
ALL the people DIED,
except Noah and his family, who were considered righteous, in God’s sight.
God’s was NOT unjust,
according to the scriptures he empowered NOAH to preach about the coming flood
for 120 years! “…But my people would not listen to me. They kept doing whatever
they wanted, following the stubborn
desires of their evil hearts…” (Jeremiah 7:24 NLT). “…and ye will not come to me that you
might have life...” (John 5:40 KJV).
God “….is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all
should come to repentance” (2 Peter 3:9 KJV). “…They kept doing whatever they
wanted, following the stubborn desires
of their evil hearts…” (Jeremiah 7:24 NLT).
The
people refused to listen to Noah and continued to do what they wanted to do. It
was the people’s CHOICE to perish in the flood. They choose “NOT” to heed God’s
calling for forgiveness or to acknowledge him.
“…Because
sentence against an evil work is not executed speedily (which is because of God’s
GRACE) …the HEART of the sons of men is fully set
in them [unrepentant]… to do evil….” (Ecclesiastes 8:11 KJV).
God’s GRACE, in the days of Noah, gave the
people AMPLE opportunity to get it RIGHT with HIM. “…Don't you see how wonderfully kind …God is with you? Does this mean nothing
to you? Can't you see that his kindness is intended to turn you from your sin?”
(Romans 2:4 NLT).
“…The
Lord isn't really being slow about his promise, as some people think. No, he is being patient
for YOUR SAKE. He does not
want anyone to be destroyed, but wants everyone to repent…” (2 Peter 3:
9 NLT).
However, one of these day, “…The harvest [will be] past,
the summer [will end], and [YOU WILL] NOT [BE] SAVED...” (Jeremiah 8:20
KJV).
Jeremiah chapter 8:4-11
gives an example of what God said, to his people, through Jeremiah, the
prophet, about NOT being repentent. “…Jeremiah,
say to the people, ‘This is what the Lord says: “‘When people fall
down, don’t they get up again?
When they discover they’re on the wrong road, don’t they turn
back? Then why do these people stay on their
self-destructive path? Why do the people of Jerusalem
refuse to turn back They cling tightly to their lies and
will not turn around. I listen to their conversations and don’t hear a word of truth. Is anyone
sorry for doing wrong? Does anyone say, “What a
terrible thing I have done”? No! All are running down
the path of sin as swiftly as a horse galloping into
battle! Even the stork that flies across the sky knows
the time of her migration, as do the turtledove, the
swallow, and the crane. They all return at the proper time each
year. But not my people! They
do not know the Lord’s laws. “‘How can you say, “We are wise because we have the word of
the Lord,” when your teachers have twisted it by
writing lies? These wise teachers will fall into the trap of their own foolishness, for
they have rejected the word of the Lord. Are they so wise after all? ... “…The harvest is past, the summer is ended,
and WE ARE NOT
SAVED...” (Jeremiah 8:20 NLT).
“…But
my people would not listen to me. They
kept doing whatever they wanted, following
the stubborn desires of their evil hearts. They went backward instead of forward” (Jeremiah 7:24 NLT).
“But the people replied, “Don’t waste your breath. We will continue to live as we want to, stubbornly following our
own evil desires” (JEREMIAH 18:12 NLT).
Noah spent 120 years
preaching to others before the flood ever arrived. “……his days shall be an hundred and twenty years…”
(Genesis 6:3 KJV).
Eventually time starts
to run out and people WILL start to realize they have lost chance after chance
to REPENT. “...the Lord said, My spirit shall not always strive with man…”
(Genesis 6:3 KJV). “…They DID NOT like to retain God in their
knowledge, GOD
GAVE THEM OVER to a reprobate mind…” (Romans 1:28 KJV).
“… I
will send rain on the earth for forty days and forty nights, and I will wipe from
the face of the earth every living creature I have made…”
(Genesis 6:5-6, 7:6 NIV).
Noah preached to
EVERYONE around and NO ONE listened, but continued to do what they wanted. “…But my people would not listen to me. They kept doing whatever they
wanted…” (Jeremiah 7:24
NLT).
“…EXCEPT YE
REPENT, ye shall all likewise PERISH…” (Luke 13:3 KJV).
“…Not one of the good promises which the Lord
had made to the house of Israel failed; ALL CAME TO PASS…” (Joshua 21:45
NASB). “… [God is]…
WATCHING OVER [HIS] WORD TO PERFORM IT …” (Jeremiah 1:12 NASB).
“…[God’s] word … that
goeth forth out of [his] mouth: IT SHALL NOT RETURN UNTO [HIM] VOID, but it shall accomplish that which [he] please, and
it shall prosper in the thing whereto [he] sent it” (Isaiah 55:11 KJV).
“… I
will send rain on the earth for forty days and forty nights, and I will wipe from
the face of the earth every living creature I have made…”
(Genesis 6:5-6, 7:6 NIV).
“…And in [the] PROCESS of time IT CAME TO PASS…” (Genesis
4:3 KJV).
“…I am
going to bring floodwaters on the earth...”
(Genesis 6:9-22 NIV). “…For forty days the
flood kept coming on the earth, and as the waters increased they lifted the ark high above the earth. The waters rose and
increased greatly on the earth, and the ark floated on the surface of the
water. They rose greatly on the earth, and all the high
mountains under the entire heavens were covered. The
waters rose and covered the mountains to a depth of more than fifteen cubits.
Every living thing that moved on land perished—birds, livestock, wild
animals, all the creatures that swarm over the earth, and all mankind. Everything on dry land that had the breath of life in its nostrils
died. Every living thing on the face of the earth was
wiped out; people and animals and the creatures that move along the ground and
the birds were wiped from the earth…”
(Genesis 7:17-24 NIV).
ONLY the righteous were
SAVED from the flood. “…It was BY FAITH that Noah BUILT A LARGE BOAT to save his family
from the flood. He obeyed God, who warned him about things that had
never happened before….” (Hebrews 11 NLT).
“…So God said to Noah, “I am going to put an end to all people …So make yourself an ark (boat) of cypress
wood; …. I am
GOING TO bring floodwaters on the earth to destroy all life under
the heavens, every creature that has the breath of life in it. Everything on
earth will perish. …But I will establish my covenant with you, and you will enter the
ark—you and your sons and your wife and your sons’ wives with you….Noah did everything
just as God commanded him.
(Genesis 6:9-22 NIV).
“…After
forty days Noah opened a window he had made in the ark
and sent out a raven, and it kept flying back
and forth until the water had dried up from the earth. …When the dove returned
to him in the evening, there in its beak was a freshly plucked olive leaf! Then
Noah knew that the water had receded from the earth. He
waited seven more days and sent the dove out again, but this time it did not
return to him. By the first day of the first month of Noah’s six hundred and
first year, the water had dried up from the earth. Noah then removed the
covering from the ark and saw that the surface of the ground was dry. By the twenty-seventh day of the second month the earth was
completely dry. Then God said to Noah, “COME OUT of the ark, you
and your wife and your sons and their wives. …So Noah came out,
together with his sons and his wife and his sons’ wives
…” (Genesis 8 NIV).
Noah preached to the people
for 120 years, all the while EXPECTING God to save him and his family. After the flood, “…God blessed Noah and his sons, saying to them, “Be fruitful and
increase in number and fill the earth.
….Everything that lives and moves about will be
food for you. Just as I gave you the green plants, I now give you everything…”
(Genesis 9 NIV).
Righteous justice, such
as the flood, does not exclude God’s LOVE or his GOODNESS. The way to
understand how love and justice can co-exist is to understand God is HOLY!
Mankind rationalizes
SIN and God does not. “… [God’s]… thoughts are
not your thoughts, neither are [his]… ways [your]… ways…..as the
heavens are higher than the earth, so are [his]… ways higher than your ways and
[his]… thoughts than your thoughts…” (Isaiah 55:8-9 ASV). “…
thou thoughtest that I was altogether
such an one as thyself…” (Psalm 50:21 KJV). “…I am God, and there is none else… I am God, and there is none like me…"
(Isaiah 46:9-10 KJV). “There is none HOLY as the Lord…” (1
Samuel 2:2 KJV).
God’s justice is ALWAYS
preceded by his GRACE and MERCY. “…Don't you see how wonderfully kind …God is with you? Does this mean
nothing to you? Can't you see that his kindness is intended to turn you from your sin?”
(Romans 2:4 NLT).
“…The
Lord isn't really being slow about his promise, as some people think. No, he is being patient
for YOUR SAKE. He does not
want anyone to be destroyed, but wants everyone to repent…” (2 Peter 3:
9 NLT). “…The LORD, The LORD God,
merciful and gracious, longsuffering,
and abundant in goodness and truth…” (Exodus 34:6 KJV). “…But you, Lord, are a compassionate and
gracious God, slow
to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness…” (Psalm 86:16
NIV).
God “….is
longsuffering to us-ward, NOT WILLING that
any should perish, but that ALL should come to repentance…” (2
Peter 3:9 KJV). “…God so loved the world that he gave his
only begotten Son, that
whosoever believeth in him, should not perish, but have everlasting life”
(John 3:16 KJV).
Without repentance, you
WILL perish in your sins. “…EXCEPT YE REPENT, ye
shall all likewise PERISH…” (Luke 13:3 KJV). “…Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of
the world” (John 1:29 KJV). “He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins…” (1
John 2:2 NIV). “…REPENT ye
therefore, and
BE CONVERTED, that your sins
may be blotted out, …” (Acts 3:19 KJV). “….God …now commandeth all men every where to REPENT…”
(Acts 17:30 KJV). “…EXCEPT YE REPENT, ye
shall all likewise PERISH…” (Luke 13:3 KJV).
“…the wages
of sin is DEATH…” (Romans 6:23).
God’s justice was delayed,
for years, before the flood. God’s GRACE and MERCY was extended to ALL, yet
eventually the flood came just as HIS WORD said it would! “…And in [the] PROCESS of time IT CAME TO PASS…” (Genesis
4:3 KJV).
“…BY THE WORD of the Lord the heavens were made…”
(Psalms 33:6 NASB).
“…BY THE
WORD of the Lord the [FLOOD came] …”
(Psalms 33:6 NASB).
“…I am
going to bring floodwaters on the earth...”
(Genesis 6:9-22 NIV). “…And rain fell on the earth forty days and
forty nights. … (Genesis 7
NIV).
“…All
things (including the FLOOD) came into being through
Him, and
apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being
… (John 1:1-4 NASB).
“…Since the CREATION of the world God’s INVISIBLE
QUALITIES—HIS
ETERNAL POWER AND DIVINE NATURE—have been “CLEARLY SEEN”, being UNDERSTOOD FROM WHAT HAS
BEEN MADE (the FLOOD)…” (Romans 1:20 NIV). “… I will send rain on the earth
for forty days and forty nights…” (Genesis 6:5-6,
7:6 NIV).
Noah preached while building an ARK for over a
100 years warning the people about the coming flood. They could have CHOSE to
go into the ARK too, but did not. “…Because
sentence against an evil work is not executed speedily …the
HEART of the sons of men is fully set in them [unrepentant]… to do evil….”
(Ecclesiastes 8:11 KJV).
How was God unjust? God GAVE them prior
WARNING through his WORD. “…[God’s] word … that goeth forth out of [his] mouth: IT SHALL NOT RETURN
UNTO [HIM] VOID, but it shall accomplish
that which [he] please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto [he]
sent it” (Isaiah 55:11 KJV).
“…BY THE
WORD of the Lord the [FLOOD came] …”
(Psalms 33:6 NASB).
“…And rain fell on the earth
forty days and forty nights. On that very day Noah and his sons, Shem,
Ham and Japheth, together with his wife and the wives of his three sons, entered
the ark. …Then
the Lord shut
him in… (Genesis 7 NIV).
God GRACE and MERCY is
PROOF he does not want to punish ANYONE, but God’ justice is also PROOF that
there are those who will not CHOOSE to receive or be redeemed by his grace and
mercy
“…BY THE
WORD of the Lord the [FLOOD came] …”
(Psalms 33:6 NASB).
THE MIRACLE OF THE FLOOD IS THAT IS CAME
JUST LIKE THE WORD OF GOD SAID IF WOULD.
HERE’S ANOTHER WORD: “… as the days of Noah were, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be…”
(Matthew 24:37 KJV).
“…The Lord saw … that every inclination of the thoughts of the human heart was only evil all the time. …”
(Genesis 6:5-6, 7:6 NIV).
“…BY THE
WORD of the Lord the [SON OF MAN IS COMING BACK] …”
(Psalms 33:6 NASB).
Just because YOU don’t
believe something, doesn’t make it any less true. Like it or not; there is
another fair and equitable judgment coming. It will be as MIRACULOUS as the
FLOOD!
