THE HOLY SPIRIT and the SOUL

“…He restoreth my SOUL…” (Psalm 23 KJV). “…The law of the LORD (the WORD of God) is perfect, restoring the SOUL…” (Psalm 19 NASB). “….He (the WORD OF GOD) restoreth my soul….” (PSALM 23:1-3 NLT).

LET'S KEEP IT SIMPLE. From the perspective, of this book, the SOUL (the non-physical) includes the thoughts, emotions, affections, appetites, heart, reason, conscience, personality, and human will of mankind, humanity, or the human being.

“…..God created man (mankind) in his own image…..male and female created he them…” (Genesis 1:27 KJV). “….God formed man of the dust of the ground (BODY), and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life (HIS SPIRIT); and man became a living soul (SOUL)…” (Genesis 2:7 KJV).

God created MALE and FEMALE in his OWN image. God is SPIRIT (non-physical)! Therefore, any LIKENESS mankind has of HIS IMAGE can ONLY BE the non-physical too.

“…..God created man in his own image…..male and female created he them…” (Genesis 1:27 KJV). “….God …breathed into [their] nostrils the breath of life (HIS SPIRIT); and man became a living soul (SOUL)…” (Genesis 2:7 KJV).

The BODY BECOMES a CONDUIT or CHANNEL for the SOUL “AFTER” God, the HOLY SPIRIT breaths into the nostrils the “BREATH OF LIFE.” “…..Man became a living soul (SOUL)…” (Genesis 2:7 KJV). “… HE (God, the Holy Spirit) Himself GIVES to all people LIFE and BREATH …” (Acts 17:25 NASB). “…apart from [God, the Holy Spirit] nothing came into being that has come into being …” (Psalms 33:6 NASB & John 1:1-4 NASB). “…we exist through Him …” (1 Corinthians 8:6 NASB).

“…..God created man in his own image…..male and female created he them…” (Genesis 1:27 KJV). “….God …breathed into [their] nostrils the breath of life (HIS SPIRIT); and man became a living soul (SOUL)…” (Genesis 2:7 KJV).

The BREATH OF LIFE is God’s, HOLY SPIRIT, which is NON-PHYSICAL. “…God is not human …” (Numbers 23:19 NIV). “…“My thoughts are nothing like your thoughts … And my ways are far beyond anything you could imagine … my ways are higher (HOLY) … my thoughts higher (HOLY)…” (Isaiah 55:5-9 NLT).

 Man’s SOUL is the NON-PHYSICAL aspect of mankind. “…..Man became a living soul (SOUL)…” (Genesis 2:7 KJV). Man was MADE ALIVE or became a "LIVING SOUL" that has thoughts, emotions, affections, reason, personality, conscience, appetites, and a human will. “…It is the SPIRIT who gives LIFE…” (John 6:63 NASB).

The BREATH OF LIFE, God’s HOLY SPIRIT expresses the DIVINE nature (non-physical) through his thoughts, words, emotions, affections, character, appetites (all HOLY), and divine will.

Man’s SOUL, expresses the HUMAN nature (non-physical) through their thoughts, words, emotions, affections, character, appetites, and human will.

Throughout the bible, the HOLY SPIRIT, the non-physical aspect of God is referred to as SPIRIT. “…God is Spirit …” (John 4:24 KJV). “… “I AM WHO I AM…” (Exodus 3:14-15 NASB). “…Since the CREATION of the world God’s INVISIBLE QUALITIES—… HIS DIVINE NATURE—have been “CLEARLY SEEN”…” (Romans 1:20 NIV). “…HIS DIVINE NATURE—have been “CLEARLY SEEN”, being UNDERSTOOD FROM WHAT HAS BEEN MADE…” (Romans 1:20 NIV).

Throughout the bible, the SOUL, the non-physical aspect of mankind, is referred to as SOUL. “…My SOUL, wait thou… upon God…” (Psalms 62:5 KJV). “… Bless the Lord, O my SOUL….” (Psalms 104:1 KJV).  “…my SOUL doth magnify the Lord…” (Luke 1:46 KJV). “…You formed my inward parts … I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Wonderful are Your works, And my SOUL knows it very well …” (Psalms 139: 7:14 NASB).

God, the HOLY SPIRIT is a spiritual BEING. “…GOD IS SPIRIT…” (John 4:24 KJV).The SOUL of man is a created being.  “…..God CREATED MAN(KIND)..male and female…” (Genesis 1:27 KJV).

God’s HOLY SPIRIT is non-physical and man’s SOUL is non-physical. “….Let us make man in “our” image, after our likeness…” (Genesis 1:26 KJV).

God, the HOLY SPIRIT is “NOT” human and the SOUL of man is “NOT” spiritual of itself, but they are both non-physical. “…GOD IS SPIRIT…” (John 4:24 KJV). “…God is not human …” (Numbers 23:19 NIV). “…. [Yet], YOU THOUGHT  I, (God, the HOLY SPIRIT) was EXACTLY like you….” (Psalms 50:21 NIV). “….let us make man in “our” image, after our likeness…” (Genesis 1:26 KJV).  “…..God created man in his “own” image…..male and female created he them…” (Genesis 1:27 KJV). “….God …breathed into his nostrils the breath of life…” (Genesis 2:7 KJV). “…GOD IS SPIRIT (THE BREATH OF LIFE)…” (John 4:24 KJV).

I don’t plan to debate established doctrine, or debate over terms, or whether God’s has a soul or not. Neither will I debate about whether the soul and spirit are interchangeable or are they one and the same. I simply want to PRESENT the relationship between God, the HOLY SPIRIT and man’s SOUL from a different perspective or revelation in hope that it will bring YOU or DRAW you closer to GOD.

God, the HOLY SPIRIT has thoughts, emotions, and a divine will. Man’s SOUL has thoughts, words, and a human will too. HOWEVER, it is important to KEEP in MIND that mankind is CREATED in God’s IMAGE; not the other way around. “…God is not human …” (Numbers 23:19 NIV).  “…. [Yet], YOU THOUGHT  I, (God, the HOLY SPIRIT) was EXACTLY like you [but GOD IS NOT]….” (Psalms 50:21 NIV).. “…God is Spirit …” (John 4:24 KJV). “… “I AM WHO I AM…” (Exodus 3:14-15 NASB). “…..God created man in his “own” image…..male and female created he them…” (Genesis 1:27 KJV).

God is SPIRIT. Mankind has a SOUL. The HOLY SPIRIT and the SOUL are BOTH non-physical aspects of God and mankind.

The BODY is a CONDUIT or CHANNEL for the SOUL and allows mankind to INTERACT with the natural WORLD.

The BODY can also be a CONDUIT for the HOLY SPIRIT and allows GOD to INTERACT with the natural WORLD too.

“…It is… GOD WHO “DOES” THE WORK IN AND THROUGH all of us who are his. The Holy Spirit “displays” God’s power THROUGH each of us…” (1 Corinthians 12:4-11 NLT). “…he doeth the works…” (John 14:10 KJV). 

In the beginning, God, the HOLY SPIRIT together with man’s SOUL dwelled together in the BODY and interacted with the natural WORLD. “….God …breathed into [their] nostrils the breath of life (HIS SPIRIT); and man became a living soul (SOUL)…” (Genesis 2:7 KJV). “….God saw … it was very good…” (Genesis 1:31 KJV).

Mankind was originally created with a BODY, GOD’s HOLY SPIRIT, and a SOUL. “….God formed man of the dust of the ground (BODY), and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life (SPIRIT); and man became a living soul (SOUL)…” (Genesis 2:7 KJV). . “….God saw … it was very good…” (Genesis 1:31 KJV).

God gave Adam and Eve ONE instruction to follow. He said: “…of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat: But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou  SHALT NOT EAT of it; for in the day that thou eatest thereof THOU SHALT SURELY “DIE” …” (Genesis 2:16-17 KJV).

Adam and Eve did not LISTEN to God’s instruction.  The SOUL acted independent of God, the HOLY SPIRIT’s instruction; it created one of the worst divorces ever known to mankind. “…The woman was convinced (in the soul’s heart). She saw (in the soul’s mind) that the tree was beautiful and its fruit looked (in the soul’s appetite) delicious, and she wanted (in the soul’s desire) the wisdom it would give her. So she took some of the fruit and ate it (acted independent of God’s instruction). Then she gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it (who also acted independent of God’s instruction , too…” (Genesis 3:1-7 NLT).

They were LED away from God by their SOUL’s TEMPTATION to do as it pleased.

“…At that moment their eyes were opened…” (Genesis 3:1-7 NLT). “…Then the Lord God asked the woman, “What have you done?” ...” (Genesis 3:7-13 NLT).  Adam and Eve were SUDDENLY “…separated from the “LIFE” of God…” (Ephesians 4:18 NIV). “… [their sin or CHOICE to act independent of God’s instruction] …separated [them]… from God… …” (Isaiah 59:2 KJV).

They FELL “AWAY” from God and were separated FROM his Holy Spirit, which CAUSED instant spiritual DEATH. “…Every man is tempted, when he (or she) is drawn away (LED AWAY) of his (or her) own lust, and enticed. Then when lust hath conceived, it BRINGETH FORTH SIN: and sin, when it is finished, BRINGETH FORTH DEATH…” (James 1:13-15 NLT). “…through one man SIN entered into the world, and DEATH THROUGH SIN, and so DEATH passed to all men—“(Romans 5:12 KJV).

“…SIN is the transgression of (breaking of) the law (God’s instructions)….” (1 John 3:4 KJV). “…Everyone who SINS is breaking God’s law (God’s instructions), for ALL SIN is contrary to the law (instructions) of God….” (1 John 3:4 NLT).“…of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat: But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou  SHALT NOT EAT of it; for in the day that thou eatest thereof THOU SHALT SURELY “DIE” …” (Genesis 2:16-17 KJV).

A LITTLE BIT OF SIN IS STILL “SOME” SIN AND “SOME” SIN IS TOO MUCH!

Adam and Eve became “…separated from the LIFE of God…” (Ephesians 4:18 NIV). “…It is the [HOLY] SPIRIT who gives LIFE…” (John 6:63 NASB). “… [their SIN] …separated [them]… from God… …” (Isaiah 59:2 KJV). “…All have sinned (or are SEPARATED from God’s HOLY SPIRIT] and fallen SHORT of the GLORY of God…” (Romans 3:23). “…The wages of sin is death…” (Romans 6:23 KJV). “…and SIN, when it is finished, BRINGETH FORTH DEATH…” (James 1:13-15 NLT).

Without God’s Holy Spirit mankind’s only has a BODY and a SOUL, but NOT God’s HOLY Spirit. They became DEAD SOULS. “…the body without (apart from) the spirit is dead…” (James 2:26 KJV) They are “…DEAD in [their] …sin” (Ephesians 2:1 KJV). “…[you are] …DEAD in sins …” (Ephesians 2:1-5 KJV). “…YOU… [ARE] … DEAD in your transgressions and sins…” (Ephesians 2:1 NIV). Like the prodigal son, “… [YOU were]…. DEAD and [you have been made]… ALIVE AGAIN; [you were]… lost and [have been]… found…” (Luke 15:24 NIV). “…Instead, give yourselves completely to God, for you were DEAD …” (Romans 6 NLT).

The SOUL is no longer CONNECTED or UNITED with God’s Holy Spirit.

The SOUL is SEPARATED from God’s Holy Spirit.

The only relationship the SOUL has is with the natural WORLD .The SOUL’S behaviors and actions, through the BODY, originate from the DEAD SOUL (which include the heart). It is“… from within, out of the heart (also part of the SOUL) of man, proceed evil thoughts…these … come from within, and defile a person.” (Mark 7:21-23 KJV).

The heart (part of the SOUL) “…is deceitful above all things and desperately wicked…who can know it…” (Jeremiah 17:9 KJV).  "…Offspring of vipers, how can you, being evil, speak good things? For out of the abundance of the heart (part of the SOUL) the mouth speaks. The good man, out of his good treasure, brings forth good things, and the evil man, out of his evil treasure, brings forth evil things." (Matthew 12:34-35 ).

“…The sinful nature (the SOUL without the HOLY SPIRIT) wants to do evil, which is just the opposite of what the [Holy] Spirit wants. And the [Holy] Spirit gives us desires that are the opposite of what the sinful nature (the SOUL without the HOLY SPIRIT) desires. These TWO FORCES are constantly fighting each other,…” (Galatians 5 NLT).

THE DEAD SOUL has “NO” spiritual ability, spiritual influence, spiritual connection, or SPIRITUAL LIFE.  The BODY, without God’s HOLY SPIRIT is DEAD. “…the body without (apart from) the [Holy} spirit is dead…” (James 2:26 KJV) “… [YOU ARE] DEAD in [your] … sin” (Ephesians 2:1 KJV). “…When you [are a DEAD SOUL]… the RESULTS are very clear: sexual immorality, impurity, lustful pleasures, idolatry, sorcery, hostility, quarreling, jealousy, outbursts of anger, selfish ambition, dissension, division, envy, drunkenness, wild parties, and other sins like these…” (Galatians 5 NLT).

Man’s SOUL becomes reduced to a completely SINFUL NATURE!

Without God, the HOLY SPIRIT, all MANKIND has is a DEAD SOUL or SINFUL NATURE, which has created a BARRIER or CHASM between them and God, the HOLY SPIRIT. “…The trouble is with me, for I am all too human, a slave to sin … I want to do what is right, but I don’t do it. Instead, I do what I hate. So I am not the one doing wrong; it is sin living in me that does it.  And I know that nothing good lives in me, that is, in my sinful nature. I want to do what is right, but I can’t. I want to do what is good, but I don’t…” (Romans 7:14-25 NLT).

Without realizing it, the SOUL became a SLAVE to SIN. “….When you offer yourselves to someone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one you obey…” (Romans 6:16 NIV). Adam and Eve obeyed the "EVIL" one.

One WRONG choice can change your life in a detrimental way. “…At that moment their eyes were opened…” (Genesis 3:1-7 NLT).  SUDDENLY they were“…separated from the “LIFE” of God…” (Ephesians 4:18 NIV).  “… one sinner destroy[ed]… much good…” (Ecclesiastes 9:18 NASB).

Choosing your OWN way is temporary, but the affect can be entrenching and long-term. “…There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of DEATH...” (Proverbs  14:20 KJV). “…There is a way that seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways DEATH ….” (Proverbs 16:25 KJV). “…and sin, when it is finished, BRINGETH FORTH DEATH…” (James 1:13-15 NLT).

The SOUL LOST the SPIRITUAL power necessary to OVERCOME the domination of SIN over their LIVES. “… the whole world lies under the power (BONDAGE,  slavery, DICTATORSHIP, etc.) of the evil one” (1 John 5:19 RSV).

 “…I am all too human, a SLAVE TO SIN.. …” (Romans 7:14-25 NLT).

“…Who will free me from this life that is dominated by SIN?…” (Romans 7:14-25 NLT).

“…The answer is in Jesus Christ our Lord (the word of god)…” (Romans 7:14-25 NLT).

“… his name (Jesus’ name) is called The Word of God…” (Revelation 19:12-13 NASB).

“…THE WORDS THAT I SPEAK unto you, they ARE SPIRIT…” (John 6:63 KJV). “…God is Spirit …” (John 4:24 KJV). The “WORD” is spirit and God is spirit; they are one and the same. “…the Word was God  … (John 1:1-4 NASB).

“… [The WORD of GOD]. It is the power of God at work, saving everyone who believes…” (Romans 1:16 NLT).  “…The Holy Spirit gives birth to SPIRITUAL LIFE …” (John 3:6 NLT). “….Apart from [the HOLY SPIRIT], you can do nothing…” (John 15:5 NIV).

Only the “breath of life” or “the HOLY SPIRIT” can return mankind BACK to God’s original, created “image” and “likeness” that was ONCE so VERY good? “….LET US MAKE man … after our likeness…” (Genesis 1:26 KJV). “…in his OWN image…..male and female created he them…” (Genesis 1:27 KJV). “…And the LORD God formed man [of] the dust of the ground (body), and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life (Holy Spirit); and man became a living soul (soul)…” (GENESIS 2:7 KJV). “….God saw every thing he had made……and, behold, it was very good…” (Genesis 1:31 KJV).

When mankind chose to follow after their flesh instead of God’s Holy Spirit they became a DEAD SOUL and a SLAVE to SIN. “….When you offer yourselves to someone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one you obey…” (Romans 6:16 NIV). “…I am all too human, a slave to sin.. …” (Romans 7:14-25 NLT).

The STORY changed. “…And the LORD God formed man [of] the dust of the ground (body), and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life (Holy Spirit); [but they follow after the FLESH] and man became a [dead] soul (soul)…” (GENESIS 2:7 KJV).

. “… [Their] INIQUITIES (sin) … separated … [them] and [their] God (Holy) …” (Isaiah 59:2 KJV). “…It’s YOUR SINS that have cut you off from God (who is HOLY)…” (Isaiah 59:2 NLT).

SIN created a BARRIER between sinful man and the HOLY God. “… And besides all this, between us and you a great chasm (barrier) has been set in place, so that those who want to go from here to you cannot, nor can anyone cross over from there to us…” (Luke 16:22-25 NASB).

This barrier will ALWAYS cause a SEPARATION, because HOLINESS can NOT and will NOT “EVER” MIX with SIN. SIN and HOLINESS SEPARATES; just like oil and water. “… And besides all this, between us and you a great chasm (barrier) has been set in place…” (Luke 16:22-25 NASB).

Therefore, ONLY “…Jesus Christ maketh thee whole [again]…” (Acts 9:34 KJV). “…If any man be in Christ, he is a NEW creature …” (2 Corinthians 5:17 KJV). “… [because] … all things are … [MADE] … NEW…” (2 Corinthians 5:17 KJV). “… I will put a “new” spirit in you. …” (Ezekiel 36:26 NLT).

 “…May God himself, the God who makes everything holy and whole, make you holy and whole, put you together [again]—spirit, soul, and body …” (1 Thessalonians 5:23-24 MSG).

God “SO” loved you and WANTED “YOU” back in UNION with him (the HOLY SPIRIT). ^“Herein is LOVE, not that we loved God, but that HE LOVED US and sent His Son...” (1 John 4:10 KJV). “…Christ came at just the right time and died for us sinners. Now, most people would not be willing to die for an upright person, though someone might perhaps be willing to die for a person who is especially good. But God showed his great LOVE FOR US by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners” (Romans 5:6-8 NLT). “…God SO LOVED the world that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him, should not perish, but have everlasting life” (John 3:16 KJV).

 “…There[fore, there is] … …one … who can reconcile God and humanity—the man Christ Jesus (The Word of God)…” (1 Timothy 2:5 NLT).

God DESIRED to have you BACK into a relationship with HIM again. Jesus confirmed God’s desire through example, through his message, and by providing the way. "I and my Father are ONE." (John 10:30 KJV). “…Jesus saith unto him, I AM THE WAY …” (John 14 6 KJV).  “…that they may ALL BE ONE; even as You, Father, are in Me and I in You, that they also may BE IN US, so that the world may believe that You sent Me…” (John 17:21-23 NASB). “…May God himself …make you holy and whole, put you together [again]—spirit, soul, and body …” (1 Thessalonians 5:23-24 MSG).

God the HOLY SPIRIT and man’s SOUL are meant to be BONDED by LOVE and CONNECTED by his SPIRIT. “…Love … is the perfect BOND of unity...” (Colossians 3:14 NASB). “…He that is JOINED unto the Lord is ONE Spirit…” (1 Corinthians 6:17 KJV).  

“…There[fore, there is] … …one … who can reconcile God and humanity—the man Christ Jesus (The Word of God)…” (1 Timothy 2:5 NLT).

“…And the LORD God formed man [of] the dust of the ground (body), and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life (Holy Spirit); and man became a living soul (soul)…” (GENESIS 2:7 KJV). “…May God himself …make you holy and whole, put you together [again]—spirit, soul, and body …” (1 Thessalonians 5:23-24 MSG). “….God saw every thing he had made……and, behold, it was very good…” (Genesis 1:31 KJV).
