CHAPTER 8
PART 3
GOD MAKES YOU HOLY
THROUGH DISCIPLINE

“…WHOM THE LORD LOVETH HE CHASTENETH (DISCIPLINES)…” (HEBREW 12:6 KJV).

“…be ye holy, for I am holy…” (1 Peter 1:16 KJV).
*

GOD KNOWS, BUT DO YOU?
The testing of your faith is more for your benefit than God’s benefit.  It comes to “…humble thee, and to prove thee, to know what was in thine heart, whether thou wouldest keep his commandments, or no” (Deuteronomy 8:2 KJV). God allows you to go through tests to prove to YOU (God already knows), what is truly in your OWN heart.
WILL YOU KEEP HIS COMMANDMENTS?
God already knows your heart, but he wants you to know it too. God does this through tribulations where who we are comes out and proves to us if we are really willing to follow Christ. In addition, it will prove whether we will keep God’s commandments or not. “….prove [to you] … what [is] in [your own] heart, whether thou wouldest keep his commandments, or no” (Deuteronomy 8:2 KJV).
Those who endure God’s discipline or testing will shed the old nature and its mindset. Eventually, those who endure will begin to freely enjoy the lasting fruit of Christ-likeness. “Wherein ye greatly rejoice, though now for a season, if need be, ye are in heaviness through manifold temptations: That the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perisheth, though it be tried with fire, might be found unto praise and honour and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ: (1 Peter 1:6-7 KJV).
God knows you better than you know yourself and knows what is best for you (Psalm 139). Godly fruit comes from discipline, but the most important benefit is the fruit of holiness. Discipline does hurt and it incites many different negative emotions during the process.
God’s purpose for discipline is always about his steadfast love for YOU and his desire for you to participate in his holiness. Therefore, “….My son, despise not thou the chastening (discipline) of the Lord, nor faint when thou art rebuked of him:” (Hebrews 12:5 KJV).
HOLY FRUIT
No matter how you see his discipline or judge it; it will be profitable to you. When you don’t faint and endure God’s discipline, you will receive the richness of His holy fruit “…love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and faith…” (Galatians 5:22 KJV).
God’s loving discipline leads you into many different classrooms of life when you face the diversity of trials and tribulations. Don’t give up or turn around; no matter how long it’s been! Some experiences seem unfair and make you question or doubt God’s love, “…but as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation (life)” (1 Peter 1:14 KJV). Holiness in conduct is always God’s goal and it never changes.
HEBREWS 12:11
God’s love appears to be tough, strict, or unbending, but it really is not. However, God doesn’t give up on his discipline just because it gets hard. God knows in the end it produces “….the peaceable fruit of righteousness…” (Hebrews 12:11 KJV).
I didn’t see the importance of this chapter at first, but God led me to include it as an important part of the relationship. Holy discipline is not a sign that God doesn’t love you, but in fact, a sign that God does love you. And it is a sign you are called with a holy calling which ultimately leads to holy training.
“[For it is God] who hath saved us, and called us with an holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began” (2 Timothy 1:9 KJV).
God disciplines his real children (Proverbs 3:12; Revelation 3:19) During the discipline process God is actually correcting you by teaching and training you in holiness. Holiness is one of the reasons he called you anyway (1 Thessalonians 4:7). The biggest task is changing your mind (repentance) and allowing it to be renewed and transformed for holiness (Romans 12:1-2).
The experiences are different from person to person, but they serve the same purposes. But you will never go through them alone, even when it seems like it. God never leaves you and spends adequate time with you (Hebrew 13:5).
God teaches you through his word and through the example of Jesus’ life. Jesus said God loved him and “…sheweth him all things that himself doeth….” (John 5:20 KVJ). And Jesus said, “…..for I do always those things that please him…” (John 8:29 KVJ).
Jesus’ reasons for obedience were “…so the world may know that I love the Father, I do exactly as the Father commanded me…” (John 6:38 KVJ). God gave us an example of godly behavior through Jesus Christ and encourages you to imitate him. The bible says “...be… imitators of God…..as beloved children …” (Ephesians 5:1 ASV).
Again, the focus of discipline is holiness, which aids in the spiritual formation of the mind and character of Jesus Christ in you (Romans 8:29). Holiness is one of God’s most important core values.
1 SAMUEL 2:2
Shared values are important in relationships. We have already established that God’s has a holy orientation, which would make his values different from yours. “…be holy, because I am holy…” (1 Peter 1:16 KJV).
Values are those core beliefs that are most important to you and that guide your behavior. God’s values are his character and represent who he actually is at the core of his being. “There is none as holy as the Lord…” (1 Samuel 2:2 KJV).
