CHAPTER 8
PART 4
GOD MAKES YOU HOLY
THROUGH DISCIPLINE

“…WHOM THE LORD LOVETH HE CHASTENETH (DISCIPLINES)…” (HEBREW 12:6 KJV).

“…be ye holy, for I am holy…” (1 Peter 1:16 KJV).

VALUES GUIDE YOUR BEHAVIOR
God’s values never change and we know he is the same yesterday, today, and tomorrow (Hebrews 13:8). God’s values play an important role in his relationship with you, which impact the boundaries his sets and his responses to sinful behavior. “…For God hath not called us for uncleanness, but unto holiness…” (1 Thessalonians 4:7 KJV).
When God’s holy values are not respected or honored, within the YADA relationship, discipline will be his reaction. “…[God disciplines] us for our profit, that we might be partakers of his holiness...” (Hebrews 12:10 KJV).
Holiness is utterly important to God and it is one value he wants you to share with him. “Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.” (2 Corinthians 7:1  KJV).
MATTHEW 5:8
Without holiness you won’t even see the Lord (Hebrews 12:14). You won’t see Him in eternity or in your daily life. God could be present in your life every day and you won’t see him. “Blessed are the pure [holy] in heart: for they shall see God” (Matthew 5:8 KJV). You need a clean heart.
The lack of holiness is usually one of the underlying reasons for God’s discipline and can cause a break in your YADA relationship.  God says, “…ye shall be holy unto me: for I the Lord am holy, and have severed you from other people, that ye should be mine. …” (Leviticus 20:26 KJV).
PSALM 4:3
Holiness is a trait that says you belong to God alone and are separated or set apart for Him (Psalm 4:3).  Truly committed married people separate themselves unto each other. You are now committed to God and should have no other gods before him (Deuteronomy 5:7). If you are not committed; repent and “…confess [your] sins, he is faithful and just to forgive … [your]… sins, and to cleanse [you]… from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:9 KJV).
If you are God’s you are committed to him above all others. God knows you don’t share every value right away, but he does want you to start sharing in holiness right away (2 Peter 1:4).
Holiness is why filling or inflating your “spiritual balloon” is one of the first gifts God gives you. Sharing in God’s holiness will promote a more intimate and “oneness” relationship (Hebrews 12:10).
1 THESSALONIANS 4:7
In your YADA relationship with God it is important to understand that God is Spirit and therefore, from his perspective holiness is a MUST. “…For God hath not called us unto uncleanness, but unto holiness…” (1 Thessalonians 4:7 KJV).
Growing in holiness is a priority to God if you want a real relationship with him and totally explains why he disciplines sinful behaviors. “….the way of holiness; the unclean shall not pass over it…. (Isaiah 35:8 KJV).
When you understand how important holiness is to God it will become important to you also. God purposefully wants you “…to put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness..” (Ephesians 4:2 KJV).
1 PETER 1:15
It will become important to you, because you love him and want to keep his commandments. “If you love me, you will keep my commandments” (John 14:15).  In addition, “…as he which called you is holy, so ye be holy in all manner of conversation” (1 Peter 1:15 KJV).
God is so serious about holiness, he told his disciples, if you want to hang-out with me, “…deny [yourself]…..and follow me….” (Mark 8:34 KJV).
The YADA relationship is a life which includes the discipline of the Lord and self-denial.  Self-denial is one mindset of holiness for the believer and demonstrates his/her separation to the service of God. It is total surrender (Philippians 2:6-8).
Godly self-denial is not about denying those things of your choosing, but those of God’s choosing. Self-denial expresses itself when you willfully and voluntarily deny yourself to follow God. Peter said, “…we have left all and have followed thee!....” (Mark 2:8 KJV).
Self-denial resigns to hold-up under whatever comes or God allows and may include:  unfairness, suffering, lack of control, blocks of time, heartbreaking loss, complexities, questions, doubts, loneliness, no reciprocity, and pain.  A holy and committed believer God “..honors, [especially those] who keep an oath even when it hurts, and does not change their mind; …” (Psalm 15:4 NIV)
The bottom line in God’s holy discipline is that true children of God WILL NOT continue to practice an ongoing life of sin. The new creation indwelling a believer ignites, provides, and produces a God-given desire to live righteous. “Whosoever abideth in him sinneth not: whosoever sinneth hath not seen him, neither known him." (1 John 3:6 KJV).
Sin is not totally eliminated altogether, but the believer doesn’t feel comfortable sinning as before and will experience the holy conviction of sin. God gives you a holy conviction via the indwelling Holy Spirit who leads real believers into all truth (John 16:13).
IS HOLINESS IN YOUR HEART?
The indwelling Holy Spirit will tell the believer to “…examine yourself , whether ye be in the faith; prove your own selves. Know ye not your own selves, how that Jesus Christ is in you, except ye be reprobates?” (2 Corinthians 13:5 KJV). In other words, do a heart assessment.
