INDWELLING SPIRIT: SIDE EFFECT OF LONGSUFFERING
“…The fruit of the Spirit is love, JOY, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance…” (Galatians 5:22-23 KJV).
*
God
takes on the responsibility of managing “ALL” aspects of longsuffering or
patience in the covenant relationship with the believer. Longsuffering and
patience are the same. I will be using the words interchangeably.
God’s loving duty is to
demonstrate patience, provide patience, empower patience, and be fully and
completely accountable for ALL aspects of patience in the covenant relationship.
You would think that
longsuffering simple means to suffer long, but it has a slightly different
meaning. You could change the word to LONGdiscipline, LONGself-control,
LONGself-restraint, LONGtemperance, or
simply LONGpatience.
It takes spiritual longsuffering
or patience a LONG time to run out of steam. God’s ability to endure is second
to none. Not only is God’s ability to endure second to none, but His patience
withstands the test of time too. “…Showing
love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments…” (Exodus 20:6 NIV).
In addition, God’s ability to
show mercy and grace while maintaining patient, is AMAZING. “…But
the fruit of the Spirit is…longsuffering
(patience)…” (Galatians 5:22-23 KJV). Obviously, longsuffering
or patience is a fruit of the Spirit, which means God, is its source. “…the … Holy Spirit …is the SOURCE of [it]… all…” (1
Corinthians 12:4-11 NLT).
“…The Lord, The Lord God, [IS] merciful
and gracious, longsuffering, and abundant in goodness and truth…” (Exodus
34:6 KJV).
“…The
Lord is longsuffering, and of great mercy…”
(Number 14:18 KJV).
“…Or
despisest thou the riches of his goodness and forbearance and longsuffering;
not knowing that the goodness of God leadeth thee to repentance?” (Romans
2:4 KJV).
“...Which
sometime were disobedient … [yet] …the longsuffering of God waited in
the days of Noah…”(1 Peter 1:20 KJV).
“…The
Lord is not slack …but is longsuffering to us-ward…” (2 Peter 3:9
KJV).
“… The
longsuffering of our Lord is salvation…”(2 Peter 3:15 KJV).
Thankfully, God has a longsuffering or
patience Spirit which endures and abounds through your MANY ongoing sins,
mistakes, rejections, failures, rebellions, pride, shortcomings, and
infidelities. “…Where
sin increased,
[GOD’S]…grace abounded all the more…” (Romans 5:20 NASB).
God’s “…grace is sufficient for you…” (2 Corinthians 12:9 NASB). His “…love
covereth a multitude of sins…” (Proverbs 10:12, 1 Peter 4:8 ASV). GOD’S “…Mercy triumphs over judgement...” (James 2:13 NASB). “…The fruit of the Spirit
is…longsuffering
(patience)…” (Galatians 5:22-23 KJV).
What would happen if God’s patience,
toward mankind, ceased? In the Old Testament we read about flood. The
longsuffering of God is His patient toward you. “...…the longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah…” (1
Peter 3:20 KJV). “…The Lord … is longsuffering to us-ward…”(2
Peter 3:9 KJV).
He also GIVES, his people, ample opportunity
to practice patience and LIVE righteous too. “…No chastening for the present seemeth to
be joyous, but
grievous: nevertheless afterward it yieldeth the peaceable FRUIT of righteousness
unto them which are exercised thereby...” (Hebrews 12:11 KJV).
God sends events, experiences, and
“seasons of suffering” in the believer’s life to teach or direct or draw them
into his righteous ways. “…Those
who walk in pride he is able to humble (Daniel 4 NIV).
God’s longsuffering in the Old Testament demonstrated
that eventually he left people to their sinful ways. “…The Lord said, “My Spirit will
not contend with humans forever…I
will wipe from the face of the earth the human
race I have created…”
(Genesis 6:4 NIV). “…God gave them over to a depraved mind…”
(Romans 1:28 NIV).
However, for those “in”
Christ, nobody knows the limits of God’s longsuffering or patient in regard to their
ongoing sinful behavior since he is so rich in
Grace and Mercy. BUT “…at the end of the world. The angels will come and separate the
wicked people from the righteous,
throwing
the wicked into the fiery furnace, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth…” (Matthew 13:49-50 NLT).
Like in the old days God sees the continual
depravity of mankind’s heart and behaviors. “…The Lord saw how great the wickedness of
the human race had become on the earth, and that every inclination of the
thoughts of the human heart was only evil all the time…”
(Genesis 6:5 NIV).
If you are still involved in ongoing sin
and still breathing, you are, right now,
benefitting from God’s longsuffering, holy, and patience Spirit. “…The Lord is longsuffering,
and of great mercy…” (Number 14:18 KJV).
“…Or despisest thou the riches of
his … longsuffering; not knowing that the goodness of God leadeth thee
to repentance?” (Romans 2:4 KJV).
God also sees every imagination of the
thoughts of your heart and clearly sees it is continually evil. “…Every inclination of the
thoughts of the human heart was only evil all the time…”
(Genesis 6:5 NIV).
If
you belong to him and gave your life to him, but continue to be unfaithful; God
is being longsuffering and patient toward you. “The Lord is… longsuffering to us-ward…”(2 Peter 3:9 KJV).
God sees the“…hidden man of the heart…” (1 Peter
3:4 KJV). God KNOWS everything
you THINK or DO, and has FULLY examined your HEART. “O Lord, you have examined my heart and know everything about me. You know when I sit down or
stand up. You know my thoughts even when I’m far
away. You see me when I travel and
when I rest at home. You know everything I do.
You know what I am going to say even before I say it, Lord. You go before me and follow me. You place your hand of blessing on
my head. Such
knowledge is too wonderful for me, too great for me understand...” (Psalms 139:1-6 NLT).
God also knows the human heart is
deceitful “… above all things and desperately
wicked…who can know it [except God?]” (Jeremiah 17:9 KJV). “…Out
of the heart come evil
thoughts,
murder, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, slanders…”
(Matthew 15:19 NASB).
Because the human heart
is deceitful above all things and man is finite God’s PATIENCE GRACE becomes sufficient
for sustaining the covenant relationship with HIM. “…confess
[your] sins,
he is faithful and just to forgive … [your]… sins, and to cleanse [you]… from all unrighteousness..”
(1 John 1:9 KJV). “…God is able
to make all GRACE abound toward
you; that ye, always having all sufficiency in all things…” (2 Corinthians 8:9 KJV). “…My GRACE is sufficient for thee: for my strength is
made perfect in weakness...” (2
Corinthians 12:9 KJV). “...Let us therefore
come boldly unto the throne of GRACE
… and find GRACE to help in time of
need…” (Hebrews 4:16 KJV).
patience IS FROM GOD.
“… May
God, who gives this patience …”
(Romans 15:5 NLT). “…the Holy Spirit produces this
kind of fruit in our lives …. Patience
…”
(Galatians 5:22-23 NLT). “…GOD IS SPIRIT…”
(John 4:24 KJV).
GOD was patient with the believer
FIRST. “…The
patience of God kept waiting in the days of
Noah …” (1 Peter 3:20 NASB). “…God
waited patiently while Noah was building his
boat…” (1 Peter 3:20 NLT). The
Lord is… longsuffering (PATIENT) to us-ward…” (2 Peter 3:9 KJV). “… The Lord is … patient toward you …” (2 Peter 3:9 KJV). “…We give [God]...only what [he]…first gave us!
…” (1 Chronicles 29:14 NLT). “…WE LOVE, because he first loved us…” (1 John 4:19 ASV).
GOD shares his patience through
his “indwelling” presence in the relationship. patience is one of the qualities
he uses to connect, relate, or attach to the believer with. “… He that is joined (through the indwelling Spirit) unto the
LORD “is” ONE SPIRIT…” (1
Corinthians 6:17 KJV). “…They will be
his people. God himself will be with them…” (Revelation 21:3 NLT). “…The Spirit of God dwell[s]… in you…” (Romans 8:9 KJV). (Hebrews 1:9 NASB). “…My Presence will go with you…”
(Exodus 33:14 NIV). “…I am with you always, to the very end…"(Matthew 28:20 NIV).
God will “…Never leave nor forsake you…”
(Hebrews 13:5 KJV).
The contribution of PATIENCE is one of the
responsibilities (tasks) God carries out in his RELATIONSHIP ROLE with the
believer. “…the God of
patience … grant (gift) you to be
likeminded … according to Christ Jesus (the Lord)…” (Romans 15:5 KJV). “…The
fruit of the Spirit is … patience … The Lord is that Spirit
… It is the SPIRIT who gives [PATIENCE]…”
(Galatians 5:22-23 NLT & 2 Corinthians 3:17 KJV & John
6:63 NASB). “… [God’s indwelling] … Holy Spirit … is the SOURCE [of it ALL]…” (1
Corinthians 12: 4-11 NLT).
GOD IMPARTS patience. “…God has sent
forth the Spirit of His Son “INTO” [YOUR HEART]…”
(Galatians 4:6 NASB). “…GOD IS SPIRIT…”
(John 4:24 KJV). “…The fruit of the Spirit is patience…”
(Galatians 5:22-23 NLT). “…The Lord
is that Spirit…” too
(2 Corinthians 3:17 KJV). “…The Holy Spirit gives birth to SPIRITUAL [PATIENCE]…”
(John 3:6 NLT).
“…It is the SPIRIT who gives [PATIENCE]…” (John 6:63 NASB).
GOD EMPOWERS patience.
“…That great Shepherd of the
sheep, EQUIP (empower) you with
everything good [the Spirit of PATIENCE]… for doing his
will, and may he work in us
(his indwelling PATIENCE) what is pleasing to him, through Jesus Christ…”
(Hebrews 13:20-21 NIV). “…God is SPIRIT…” (John 4:24 KJV). “…It is
God which worketh IN YOU
both to
will (be empowered) and to do
(behave patiently) …”
(Philippians 2:13 KJV).
God supplies patience. “…God shall supply ALL YOUR NEED according
to his riches in glory BY Christ Jesus…” (Philippians 4:19
KJV). “….The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. ….” (PSALM 23:1-3 NLT). “…God will generously
PROVIDE all … [the patience] …
you need…” (2 Corinthians 9:8 NLT).
GOD’S pATIENCE NEVER CHANGES OR FAILS.
. “…the God of
patience …” (Romans 15:5 KJV). “…I am the Lord, I
change NOT…”
(Malachi 3:6 KJV). “…Jesus Christ is the
same
yesterday and today and forever”
(Hebrews 13:8 NIV).
GOD’S pATIENCE CAN’T BE SEPARATED FROM YOU, EVEN IF
YOU SEPARATE FROM HIM. “…The fruit of the Spirit is … patience…”
(Galatians 5:22-23 NLT). “…The Lord
is that Spirit…” (2
Corinthians 3:17 KJV). “…Jesus Christ IS IN YOU…”
(2 Corinthians 13:5 KJV). “…I AM WITH YOU ALWAYS…"(Matthew
28:20 NIV). “…I “IN” YOU…” (John 15:4 KJV). “… he remains faithful…” (2
Timothy 2:13 NLT).
GOD’S pATIENCE LASTS FOREVER. “…The fruit of the Spirit
is … patience…”
(Galatians 5:22-23 NLT). “…The Lord
is that Spirit…” (2
Corinthians 3:17 KJV). “…Jesus Christ IS IN YOU…”
(2 Corinthians 13:5 KJV). “…I AM WITH YOU ALWAYS (FOREVER) …"(Matthew
28:20 NIV). “…God has said “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you…”
(Hebrews 13:5 NIV).
GOD’S pATIENCE IS SO POWERFUL IT IS LIKE A NEON “SIGN” THAT SHOWS YOU ARE HIS
DISCIPLES. “…The fruit of the Spirit is … patience…”
(Galatians 5:22-23 NLT). “…The Lord
is that Spirit…” too
(2 Corinthians 3:17 KJV). “…Jesus Christ IS IN YOU…” (2 Corinthians 13:5 KJV). “…Ye shall know them by their fruits…” (Matthew
7:16 KJV). Therefore, "… bear much
fruit, and … PROVE to be …
[God’s] … disciples” (John 15:8 NIV).
GOD’S pATIENCE is a fruitful side effect of the
ingested holy spirit. “…The fruit of the Spirit is … patience…”
(Galatians 5:22-23 NLT). “… They,
which in an honest and good heart, having heard the word, keep it, and bring forth fruit with patience…”
(Luke 8:15 KJV).
God’s pATIENCE is understood by faith. “… BY FAITH we UNDERSTAND (become
aware of) …that what we now see did not come from anything that can be
seen…” (Hebrews 11 NLT). “…The fruit of the (invisible) Spirit is … patience…”
(Galatians 5:22-23 NASB). “…The invisible
[Spirit]…from the creation of the world is …clearly seen, being understood by the things that are MADE …” (Romans 1:20 KJV). “… All
things are … [MADE] … NEW…” (2 Corinthians 5:17 KJV). “…Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a NEW
creature …” (2 Corinthians 5:17 KJV). “… BY FAITH we UNDERSTAND (become
aware of) …” (Hebrews 11 NLT). “…Ye shall
know them by their fruits…” (Matthew 7:16 KJV). “…The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance…”
(Galatians 5:22-23 KJV).
GOD”S pATIENCE IS EXPERIENCED BY
TRUST. “…Trust
in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto
thine own understanding. In all thy ways
acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths…”
(Proverbs 3:5-6 KJV). “…The fruit of the Spirit … patience…”
(Galatians 5:22-23 NLT). “…The Lord
is that Spirit…” (2 Corinthians 3:17 KJV). “…Jesus
Christ IS IN YOU…” (2 Corinthians
13:5 KJV). “…God … works in you … to will and to act
…” (Philippians 2:13 NIV). “…Trust
in the Lord with all thine heart …” (Proverbs 3:5-6 KJV).
God’s pATIENCE is MANIFESTed
through surrender. “…Submit therefore to God…” (James 4:7
NLT). “… I came down from heaven, not to
do mine own will, but the will of him that sent me” (John 6:38 KJV). “….the Son of Man came not to be served but to
serve others …"
(Matthew 20:28). “…I must be about my Father's
business?” (Luke 2:49 KJV). “…I desire to do your
will, my God…” (Psalms 40:8 KJV). “…I
have come to do your will, my God…'" (Hebrews 10:7, 9 KJV). “…I do
nothing of myself…”
(John 8:28 KJV). “…the Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works…”
(John 14:10 KJV). “…My brethren ….the testing of your faith produces PATIENCE … let PATIENCE have its perfect work,
that you may be perfect (mature) and
complete, lacking nothing….”
(James 1:2-4 KJV)
GOD’S pATIENCE IS OFTEN “NOT” BELIEVED.
“…
The Lord is … patient toward you …” (2 Peter 3:9 KJV). “…Take heed, brethren, lest
there be in any one of you an evil heart of
unbelief, in departing
from the living God...” (Hebrews 3:12 KJV).
“…See
to it, brothers and sisters, that none of you
has a sinful, unbelieving heart that turns away from the living
God…” (Hebrews 3:12 NIV). “…I DO believe; HELP me overcome my unbelief!”
(Mark 9:24 NIV). “…The Lord is… longsuffering
to us-ward…”
(2 Peter 3:9 KJV).
GOD’S pATIENCE IS RECEIVED. “…RECEIVE
with meekness the engrafted word …”
(James 1:21 KJV). "…Truly I tell you, if anyone … DOES
NOT DOUBT in their heart but believes … it
will be done for them….”
(MARKS 11:23 NIV). “…
lean
not unto thine own understanding …” (Proverbs 3:5-6 KJV). “…My people are
destroyed for lack of
knowledge…” (Hosea 4:6 NIV). “…God is Spirit …” (John
4:24 KJV). “…ANYONE WHO COMES TO HIM MUST
BELIEVE THAT HE (and His patience)
EXISTS…” (Hebrews 11:6 NIV).

(Galatians 4:6 NASB). “…The fruit of the Spirit is … patience…”
(Galatians 5:22-23 NLT). “…The Lord
is that Spirit…” (2
Corinthians 3:17 KJV). “…Jesus Christ IS IN YOU…”
(2 Corinthians 13:5 KJV).
God’s patience is spiritual. “…The
fruit of the Spirit is … patience…”
(Galatians 5:22-23 NLT). “…GOD IS SPIRIT…”
(John 4:24 KJV).
God’s patience is forever. “…The fruit of the Spirit
is … patience…”
(Galatians 5:22-23 NLT). “…God’s Spirit
dwells in
[YOU]...” (1 Corinthians 3:16 NASB).
“…I AM
WITH YOU ALWAYS (forever)…"(Matthew 28:20 NIV). “…God has said “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you…”
(Hebrews 13:5 NIV).
God supplies you with enough patience for yourself
and to share with others. “…God shall supply ALL YOUR NEED …” (Philippians
4:19 KJV). “…God will generously PROVIDE all … [the patience] … you need…”
(2 Corinthians 9:8 NLT). .
“…my cup runneth over (with patience)…” (Psalms 23:5 KJV).God is El
Shaddai, the God who is MORE than enough.
God’s patience is displayed as spiritual fruit in
your life and others can see it. “…Ye shall know them by their fruits…” (Matthew
7:16 KJV). “…The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering (patience), gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance…”
(Galatians 5:22-23 KJV).
If you do NOT have the
indwelling Spirit, you are NOT one of God’s children and the fruit is the
evidence. “…And
remember that those who do not
have the Spirit of Christ living in them do not belong to him at
all…”
(Romans 8:8-11 NLT). “…Ye shall know them
by their fruits…” (Matthew 7:16 KJV). “…The Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, PATIENCE,
kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness,
and self-control….”
(Galatians 5 NLT).
